Advanced periodontal disease is a major cause of adult tooth loss and 75% of adults are affected. It starts with a reversible first stage called gingivitis and progresses through several stages eventually leading to periodontal surgery or tooth loss if not treated. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection attacking the gums, bone and ligaments that surround the teeth producing several symptoms such as bleeding, redness, swelling, bad breath and tooth mobility. At Reed Family Dentistry, we are experienced with treating this disease in its various stages through non-surgical periodontal therapy and maintenance. The purpose of this intervention is to avoid extraction and surgery where that is possible. Where the disease has advanced, and non-surgical treatment is not adequate, we guide our patients into the hands of specialists who will take them to the next step of their care. Optimal non-surgical results are achieved daily in our practice, and we are pleased to say our success rate has been high by using various treatment modalities and the teamwork between the patient, their dental hygienist, and their dentist.
