Family Dentistry in Millington & Covington, TN

Total Oral Health: the whole picture, looked after by one trusted team.

Total Oral Health is our shorthand for the everyday dentistry that keeps a mouth healthy for a lifetime. Cleanings, exams, gum care, fillings, crowns, bridges, extractions, and all the small clinical decisions that add up over the years. Everything else we do rests on it.

We call it total because we look at the whole picture rather than one tooth at a time. How your gums are doing, how your bite is wearing, whether any early decay is starting up, and what has changed since your last visit. That long view is what catches problems while they’re still small and simple to fix.

Preventative Care: Cleanings, Exams & Screenings

A routine dental cleaning and exam every three to six months is the best money you’ll ever spend on your teeth. Your visit covers a professional teeth cleaning, a comprehensive dental exam, digital X-rays, fluoride and sealants where they help, and an oral cancer screening.
Our hygiene team is one of the most experienced in the region. Several of our hygienists have been here for decades and have looked after the same families that whole time. When the person cleaning your teeth has watched your mouth for twenty years, they notice the changes a stranger would miss.

Periodontal Care: Treating Gum Disease

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and it usually gets a long way along before anybody notices. Bleeding when you brush is the sign most people talk themselves out of.
We treat it without surgery. That starts with a deep cleaning below the gum line, and we back it up with laser-assisted therapy, which helps the gums heal faster and more completely than a deep cleaning on its own. Healthy gums hold everything else in place, so this is where we start when there’s a problem.

Restorative Care: Fillings, Crowns & Bridges

When a tooth is damaged, decayed, or missing, we restore it with work built to last. Tooth-colored fillings, bridges, onlays, extractions when a tooth can’t be saved, and full-mouth reconstruction for mouths that need rebuilding.

Same-Day Crowns
We have CEREC scanners and a milling unit in the office, so we design and mill your crown while you’re here. No temporary crown, and no coming back to get numbed a second time. We fix what’s in front of us and we plan for the twenty years after it. Three generations of Reed dentists have looked after families here, and we work by the motto that we’ve never had a tooth walk in the door unattached. We see patients from Millington, Covington, Atoka, Munford, Tipton County, north Shelby County, Lauderdale County, Ripley, Mason, and the greater Memphis area.

Common Questions About Everyday Dental Care

Every six months for most people. If you have gum disease, or a history of it, we may want to see you more often until things are stable. Your hygienist will tell you which camp you’re in rather than putting everyone on the same schedule.

A deep cleaning goes below the gum line to remove hardened plaque a routine cleaning can’t reach. You need one when gum disease has started, and you’d know because the gums bleed, feel tender, or have begun pulling away from the teeth.

Yes. Our CEREC scanners and in-office milling unit let us design and fit your crown the same day, so there’s no temporary and no second appointment to get numbed again. Occasionally, teeth might require certain materials that don’t allow a crown in one visit, but we can always evaluate that beforehand.

Bleeding when you brush or floss, gums that look red or puffy, persistent bad breath, tenderness, gums pulling back from the teeth, and in later stages teeth that feel loose. Bleeding is the earliest sign and the one most people ignore.

The early stage can. Gingivitis often clears up with a thorough cleaning and better habits at home. Once it’s advanced to periodontitis and bone has been lost, we can stop it progressing and settle the gums down, but the lost bone doesn’t come back. That’s the argument for coming in early.

It shouldn’t. Healthy gums feel very little. If your gums are inflamed a cleaning can be tender, which is usually a sign there’s more going on and worth telling us about.

We check every tooth for decay, measure the health of your gums, look at how your bite is wearing, take digital X-rays when they’re due, and screen for oral cancer. Then we tell you what we found in plain language.

Yes, as part of your regular exam rather than as an extra. It takes a couple of minutes and it’s the reason some things get caught early enough to matter.

Due for a Cleaning?

If it’s been a while, that’s alright. Nobody here is going to make you feel bad about it. Call whichever office is closer and we’ll get you booked in.
